The Trouble with TANF

It shouldn’t be so hard for New Mexican families with children to get assistance

We all go through periods of crisis in our lives. When we do, some of us call upon family and friends for help, but not everyone has that option.

In this new video series, five mothers share how unnecessary Temporary Assistance for Needy Families rules stopped them from getting the help they need AND how impactful assistance was when they managed to get it.

TANF gives parents and children much needed support to help stabilize and improve their futures. Studies show that even small increases in income in early childhood have long-term, dramatic improvements in children’s future economic opportunity and educational attainment. Unfortunately, New Mexico operates one of the most punitive programs in the country. Only 40% of New Mexican families eligible for TANF actually receive it. Take action to change New Mexico’s TANF program along with our partners Crossroads for Women and NMCAN!
