Supportive housing transforms woman’s life after a traumatic brain injury

Clean and sober for 20 years, Lisa’s journey took an unexpected turn after a terrible car accident left her with a traumatic brain injury and several broken bones.

“After the car accident, I felt so alone and isolated and not safe. I felt not worth anything because I couldn’t work anymore,” says Lisa. “I just remember the day they put the sale sign on my house and I drove away with what I could in my car and everything else ended up in the dump.”

Life after the accident has been full of unexpected challenges for Lisa and her children, but she’s never given up hope. Finding stable housing and support through Crossroads for Women has allowed Lisa to rebuild and transform her life.

“Crossroads has given me a second chance. They provided me the support I needed to get into housing and take care of myself. They’ve helped me understand the services that are available to us (her kids). They’ve helped me understand and apply for disability. They’ve been my moral support. They’ve been my emotional support. They’ve taught me not to be a victim. I think that’s probably the main thing that I hold to myself is that I don’t want to be a victim anymore.”

We’re honored to be able to share part of Lisa’s story with the community she loves.
