Gordon Bernell Charter School (GBCS) has been a partner with Crossroads for Women for many years. Through their adult education programs, hundreds of Crossroads clients have obtained their GEDs inside and outside of jail.
Last year, Gordon Bernell lost over half of its funding through PED. While additional funding is being channeled through Higher Education, without the acceptance of the HB2 GORDON BERNELL AMENDMENT, there is no guarantee the money will make it to GBCS. This week Crossroads for Women staff and clients have been calling and emailing Senators and the Senate Finance Committee to advocate for GORDON BERNELL HB2 AMENDMENT. We want to see funding secured for GBCS so justice-involved individuals in our community can continue to obtain their education.
Here’s how you can help:
- Email the Senate Finance Committee (see list of emails below)
- In the subject line write: SUPPORT GORDON BERNELL HB2 AMENDMENT
- In the body of the email:
- Thank Senator Rue for sponsoring the amendment, and ask Chairman Senator Arthur Smith and Co-Chair Senator Munoz to support the GBCS Amendment.
- Write a brief email that expresses why you would like to see GBCS continue operating. The main argument against GBCS is that other adult ed programs serve students at less cost. We maintain that our students often require more than what traditional adult ed offers in order to stabilize and succeed. Remind the committee that the funding is already designated to Higher Ed and should go to Gordon Bernell as originally intended.
