Community advocacy work already making an impact in 2020

January has been a busy month for the women of Crossroads led by Community Engagement Coordinator Dalilah Naranjo. From an ACLU storytelling workshop for clients to a MLK Day service project completed by Amy Biehl High School students, 2020 community advocacy work is already off to a great start.

Check out what we’ve been up to this month! If you or your organization are interested in getting involved with Crossroads, please email us.

ACLU Storytelling Workshop

In partnership with ACLU of New Mexico and Bosque School, earlier this month Crossroads clients and Bosque students attended a storytelling workshop to prepare for End Mass Incarceration Day of Action coming up on February 5 at the New Mexico State Capitol.

Clients and students who attended the workshop had this to say:

“The workshop activated my mind that there’s more to be learned and that work can be done.” – Henrietta, Crossroads alumni

“Don’t judge a book by its cover. Just because we’ve been incarcerated doesn’t mean that we’re bad people.” – Veronica, Crossroads client

“I grew up in a very privileged household. I don’t have family or friends that have been incarcerated and I’ve always had access to really good healthcare. This is a good space for me to learn in a way that is productive not only for myself but for my community.” – Alejandra, Bosque student

Amy Biehl High School MLK Service Project

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr Day, students from Amy Biehl High School spent Monday, January 20 cleaning the downtown Crossroads building inside and out. They also sorted and organized in-kind donations.

Girl Scout Troop #10653

This week our Community Engagement Coordinator visited Girl Scout Troop #10653 to educate the members on gender equity and stereotypes. Girl Scouts in attendance also learned about the women of Crossroads and created beautiful butterfly drawings to represent their feelings after viewing a video about Crossroads.
