Kristy’s Story

Back in 2012, an interview conducted in prison changed the path for a beautiful, inspiring young woman by the name of Kristy Lopez. This interview she had with Cory Lee changed her–it gave her an idea of what life could look like, what could be possible for her, and what she could become if she chose to do so.

Kristy became a client at Maya’s Place. While at Maya’s Place, Kristy says she experienced structure for the first time in her life. The requirements that she had to fulfill to move to each step in the program opened her eyes and changed her. What she learned set her up to become successful.

While she tried to work hard and apply what she was learning, she did unfortunately relapse. Immediately after her relapse, she found that with Crossroads her honesty was allowed, as well as encouraged. Her honesty met with no judgment, rather with open arms. She realized that honesty was a large part of what she needed to work on with Crossroads. That honesty was a revelation. She was able to move forward, complete her work with Crossroads, and in 2014 Kristy received her Certificate of Completion.

“Crossroads for Women helped me to become a successful person in society today. If it were not for all the tools that they provide, I honestly do not know what I would have done. I definitely have them to thank for giving me all of the life skills and tools to live in society.”

Kristy Lopez

Kristy was the first out and proud Trans woman to enter the Crossroads program. Kristy has helped to educate those around her and to further help the women that come after her. Currently she is working in harm reduction and does needle exchange. She is also honored to be a trans woman in her field, and to be considered a professional.

This year at the Night of Excellence, an awards ceremony for Crossroads aftercare clients and staff, Kristy was honored with the Butterfly Award. The Butterfly Award is one of the highest honors Crossroads can bestow. Her metamorphosis has been incredibly beautiful, and her growth is sure to continue. Kristy met one of her long-term goals on June 10th: she has closed on her first home! Kristy qualified for her home completely on her own using the first-time home buyers’ loan that was introduced to her in a CRFW class.

Kristy has a message for all current and future Crossroads clients: “Always focus on you. No matter how long it takes. At the end of the day you are important, you are worthy. Not only to you but your family as well. Your decision should always be you first.”

Kristy says, “Crossroads for Women helped me to become a successful person in society today. If it were not for all the tools that they provide, I honestly do not know what I would have done. I definitely have them to thank for giving me all of the life skills and tools to live in society.”

Kristy is truly an inspiration. She is a perfect example of what women can accomplish with work, commitment, and a strong support system. The Crossroads Family is extraordinarily grateful for all her contributions for them and for all women.
